Philosophy of Complementary Therapy

We are committed to providing a professional holistic service of therapeutic reflexology, holistic massage and aromatherapy in a safe, relaxing and comfortable environment.

We endeavour to provide an empathic and healing presence in which patients are enabled to enhance their quality of life by relaxing and releasing stress, fear and anxiety associated with their diagnosis and treatment.

A Specialist Nurse in Complementary Therapy provides this service for patients of St Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network.

Reflexology

Reflexology is  based on the principal that all structures and organs of the body are mirrored on the feet and hands. Specific touching techniques stimulate the reflex points which help the body to regain a balanced state.

Reflexologists work from maps of predefined points on the feet and hands by stimulating these pressure points.  This controlled pressure alleviates sources of discomfort, these pressure points are  believed to connect directly through the nervous system and affect the body’s organs and glands.

By means of this touching therapy, any point of the body that is a source of pain, illness or potential debility can be strengthened through the application of pressure at the related point on the foot or hand.

Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating the nerves in the body and encouraging blood flow, which helps quell the sensation of pain and also relieves the source of the pain as well.

Therapeutic Holistic Massage

It is a gentle rhythmical touch with movements varied to suit individual needs.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to promote healing and a feeling of well-being and relaxation. Essential oils extracted from herbs and plants contain all properties of the plants themselves. The therapeutic effects of aromatherapy result from the physiological effects of the oils used.

Complementary therapies help to promote:

  • Relaxation
  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Alleviate pain and nausea
  • Improve sleep patterns
  • Reduce depression
