Established 2002 | Ireland’s longest-running Radiation Oncology trials unit

Under the leadership of Professor Sinead Brennan, Director of Research, and Emma Noone, the Research project Manager, the CTU is playing a pivotal role in advancing radiation oncology research across the country. CTU is funded by the Irish Research Radiation Oncology Group (IRROG) HRB grant (2022-2026), along with charitable donations from the Friends of St Luke’s, the St Luke’s Cancer Research Fund through SLICR and direct support from SLRON.
Our Mission
Participation in clinical trials is associated with improved treatment outcomes and survival rates. The CTU’s primary mission is to expand its clinical trial portfolio, offering patients a wider range of treatment options and increasing participation in research. We collaborate with both Irish and international trial groups, providing access to a broad spectrum of studies. CTU also supports the development of Investigator-Initiated Trials (IITs) within SLRON and nationally through IRROG.
The National Cancer Strategy 2017–2026 highlights the importance of integrating clinical trials as a core activity in cancer centres. A key performance indicator is enrolling 6% of cancer patients in therapeutic trials annually. SLRON CTU proudly achieved this benchmark in 2024 and is on course to achieve it again in 2025. In 2024 SLRON was also the leading recruiter to interventional trials among all oncology trial groups in Ireland
Our Team
The CTU is a dedicated multidisciplinary team of clinical and non-clinical professionals, including radiation therapists, nurses, a biostatistician, administrators, and a data manager. Together, they ensure all trial activities meet the highest standards of quality, compliance, and patient care. CTU maintains a strong collaborative relationship with Cancer Trials Ireland (CTI), supporting the initiation and management of clinical trials within SLRON and ensuring all studies are conducted in full accordance with ethical and regulatory requirements.
Our Clinical Trial Portfolio
We offer studies across a wide range of cancers including, Breast, Prostate, Lung, Head and neck, Pancreatic, Central nervous system (CNS), Renal cell, Gynaecological and oligo-metastatic cancers.
